Hello. I’m Dr. Shin Dong-woo, Chief Surgeon at Planet Plastic Surgery Clinic.
As a board-certified plastic surgeon, I have performed thousands of facelift procedures over the past 17 years.
Among the questions patients ask most frequently after surgery, there is one that stands out above the rest: “When will the swelling from my facelift go down?”
Post-operative swelling places a significant psychological burden on many patients. Some even share that it has affected their self-confidence.
Of course, it is a necessary part of the journey toward a more beautiful appearance — but after surgery, it’s natural to find yourself checking the mirror often. Feeling disheartened when you see a swollen face is entirely understandable.
That’s why patients want the swelling to subside as quickly as possible.
Because I deeply empathize with how my patients feel, we developed — through considerable trial and error — a program designed to significantly reduce swelling within one to two weeks.
In fact, I consider this our responsibility to every patient who has placed their trust in us.
Today, I’d like to talk about the aftercare methods we use to reduce post-facelift swelling within one to two weeks.
If you follow the approach I’m about to describe, your concerns and anxiety about post-operative swelling should diminish considerably. I hope you’ll read through to the end.
Post-Facelift Swelling: Check Whether a Personalized Care Program Is in Place
Swelling after facelift surgery presents differently from patient to patient.
Even when the same procedure is performed, some patients experience minimal swelling, while others swell to a degree that noticeably alters their appearance.
This variation arises from differences in each person’s physical constitution and skin condition.
We make every effort to minimize post-facelift swelling through thorough pre-operative assessment, but there are inherent limits to how completely every variable can be controlled.
That is why we address these challenges through a personalized post-operative care program tailored to each patient’s needs.
So — why does swelling occur in the first place?
Swelling develops when lymphatic fluid or blood accumulates in a specific area and circulation becomes obstructed. Edema appears when this flow is disrupted.
To resolve it, that blocked circulation must be restored to normal.
To achieve this, we apply a range of techniques including lymphatic massage and methods that promote improved skin circulation.
At some clinics, however, patients receive only a generic explanation such as, “The swelling will go down on its own with time,” or “Swelling is a sign that your surgery went well.”
Patients naturally want a real, substantive solution — not a dismissal.
That kind of response is something I find genuinely regrettable.
For this reason, I strongly recommend choosing a clinic that has a well-structured, personalized aftercare program in place from the outset.
For example, immediately following surgery, we apply microcurrent therapy to release the lymphatic system and promote cutaneous blood circulation, facilitating rapid reduction of swelling.
We also offer a range of individualized aftercare treatments, including Cell Cream therapy to support cellular regeneration, Silveron Solution, and Ulthera Tan & Mask — a topical lifting treatment — all tailored to each patient’s specific condition.
That said, having a wide variety of treatments available does not automatically translate to better care.
Recovery is fastest when management is genuinely customized to the individual patient’s needs, so I recommend choosing a clinic where this kind of thoughtful, personalized approach is clearly evident.
One Final Note
We occasionally receive inquiries from patients who had surgery at another clinic and wish to receive post-operative care at our facility.
As we perform only one surgery per day in order to dedicate our full attention to the aftercare of our existing patients, we are unfortunately unable to accommodate external aftercare requests. We appreciate your understanding.
For this reason, I encourage you to choose a clinic from the very beginning that provides thorough management through both the surgery itself and the aftercare that follows — so you can make a decision you won’t regret.
If you have any questions beyond what I’ve covered today, or if you’d like a personal consultation, please feel free to reach out via the contact information below or through our 1:1 inquiry board.
I will personally respond to every inquiry. ^^
